A few days ago marked my two year anniversary of going natural with my hair. I could write some motivational post about overcoming oppression, and being a non-conformist. I could tell you about the people who, upon seeing my kinky hair, assume that I’m a hippie pothead who hasn’t taken a bath in weeks, and think I wash my hair even less frequently. I could stand on a soapbox outside of the Dudley-Q haircare headquarters and protest that their products are decreasing the self-esteem of many African-American women (and men), and that their mixtures of alkaline, and sodium hydroxide actually have the strength to eat through live flesh.
But I’m not a revolutionary… I’m just a woman who feels comfortable letting her hair do what it naturally does and saving $800 a year in the meantime.
And yes, I still wear it straight from time to time. Sue me.
